The Missouri Writers' Guild is hosting a flash fiction contest. From the website:

What is Flash Fiction? It's fun. It's challenging. For writers, it is an exercise in rewriting and editing. It is a short short story.

2009 Essence Short Fiction Writing Contest
Author Niobia Bryant has a blog post on the 2009 Essence Short Fiction Writing Contest. The rules say you can enter one story up to 2,500 words and the entry must be postmarked by September 30, 2008 and received by October 7, 2008. They're looking for new voices, so you can't have previously published in a major book or in a magazine with a circulation over 25,000. The story must feature "an adult female of African descent as the main character."
The prize: $1000 plus publication in Essence. Looks like a great opportunity for a new writer to get recognition.

There are two categories - young writers (under 25) and the rest of us. Ironically it's hosted by the Brits. Hey, let the weak dollar make a double-the-prize winner out of you. The younguns get 500 pounds (where the heck is that pound symbol on the keyboard, anyway?) and the old pros get 1000 pounds. No entry fee. Deadline is September 30, 2008.
And the LAWritersgroup has a post about a travel writing contest seeking entries about little-known travel destinations. Again, no entry fee I can see. Deadline is October 31, 2008.

Wow. This is exactly the kind of thing I'd have been terrified to do as a teen, sure I'd fall in and drown the first day, ruining the trip for everyone.
Mostly I stayed safely inside with my pudgy nose crammed in a book. But this contest, it makes me wish I was athletic and seventeen. I was never the former. Actually I went tourist rafting on the Snake River when I was about fifteen, so overweight teens, go for it. I had a blast.

Submit an unpublished story of up to 7,000 words by November 15, 2008. Only unpublished writers are eligible.

The Christian Writers Marketplace has deets on a Guideposts contest.
Fifteen writers will get a free week at the Guideposts Writers Workshop October 13 - 17 to study up on how to write for Guideposts.
Correction: The workshop is in Rye, New York and includes travel costs. Sounds like a great deal.

Don't forget the deadline for the 2008 River Styx Poetry Contest is May 31, 2008. It has a large entry fee, but it's a well-respected contest and a correspondingly large prize.

"The Nation's" Student Writing Contest
