From Idaho: a contest for high school juniors and seniors to win a writing and rafting trip on the Lower Salmon river. To enter, you write two pages about an adventure, dream or memory. Twelve winners will get the combined writing and nature adventure to inspire them to write.

Submission deadline: July 11, 2008
Trip: August 10-17, 2008

Wow. This is exactly the kind of thing I'd have been terrified to do as a teen, sure I'd fall in and drown the first day, ruining the trip for everyone.

Mostly I stayed safely inside with my pudgy nose crammed in a book. But this contest, it makes me wish I was athletic and seventeen. I was never the former. Actually I went tourist rafting on the Snake River when I was about fifteen, so overweight teens, go for it. I had a blast.

Let's Hear It For My Daughter Tessa!

My daughter Tessa received an honorable mention in a teen short story contest.

Whoo hoo! I'm so proud of her. Her short story "Reign of the Wolves" is a fantasy about a wolf colony that rules a world where humans are the minority. She did a fabulous job on it. Maybe some day she'll let me post part of it.

Seventeen Magazine Fiction Writing Contest for Teens

Seventeen Magazine is hosting a fiction writing contest for its readers. The task is to finish a Meg Cabot story with 350 words that represent your personality and preserve the story line.

Deadline: Entries must be postmarked by January 2, 2008 and arrive by January 7.

According to Meg Cabot's website, the prize is $2,500, possible publication in Seventeen, and your name used for a character in her next book.

African American Teen Magazine Launches

Mahogany Visions is a new magazine aimed at african americans teens age 13-18. According to the press release:

"Features will include current events, education, business, health and fitness, college news, and teen lifestyles. The Magazine was created to uplift and motivate the young African American community."

You can see their first issue at MahoganyVisions.com. They are looking for writers to contribute to the magazine.

New U.K. Teen Magazine

The U.K.'s Christian Magazine Inspire is reporting the launch of a new spiritual magazine for girls called Caris.

The magazine, aimed at 11-16-year-olds, features inspiring stories for and about teen girls. It's focus is more on activism and empowerment, with the fun stuff thrown on the side - music, fashion, beauty tips - but no sex stories or celeb focus.

Their tag line: Caris "with an ethical edge and a campaigning spirit
for girls with body, mind and soul!"
