New Letters, the University of Missouri-Kansas City's prestigious literary magazine, is sponsoring writing contests for essay, poetry, and short fiction submissions.

The contests:
The $1,500 New Letters Prize for Poetry
for the best group of three to six poems

The $1,500 Dorothy Churchill Cappon Prize for the Essay
for the best essay (not to exceed 8,000 words)

The $1,500 Alexander Patterson Cappon Prize for Fiction
for the best short story (not to exceed 8,000 words)

Entry fee: $15 (but this includes a subscription to New Letters)

Postmark Deadline: May 18, 2008

Potpourri - Contests, Writer's Job, New Magazine Launches

Comics Worth Reading says Tokyopop is having a comic writing contest. Deadline is April 15th.

The African American Playwrights Exchange (AAPEX) reports NBC wants "ethnically diverse writers" to work on NBC's primetime series (not sure if this is a strike violation, so you might want to check when you apply).

Canadian Magazines says Reader's Digest is launching a new health magazine aimed at Canadian women.

Got a novel manuscript burning a hole in your pocket? C. Hope Clark has a great article in her W.O.W. column about novel contests you can submit to while waiting for agents/editors to respond to your queries. She lists competitions for entire novels, excerpts, first chapters, and even first lines.

Writing Contest List from Pikes Peak Library District

Colorado's Pikes Peak Library District has an extensive list of writing contests posted on its site.

For example, it's again time to submit humor essays to the Erma Bombeck Writing Competition. The deadline is February 17, 2008. No entry fee!

Highlights for Children is also having a short story contest for futuristic stories. Entries can be up to 800 words and must be postmarked between January 1 - January 31st. No entry fee.
